Prof. Vanessa FRANSSEN

Vanessa Franssen is an assistant professor at the University of Liège (since Fall 2015) and an affiliated senior researcher at the Institute of Criminal Law of the KU Leuven in Belgium. From February 2014 till October 2015 she was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Luxembourg. She is also a member of the Brussels bar, where she practices economic criminal law.

She holds a PhD degree in Law (KU Leuven, 2013), a master’s degree in Law (KU Leuven and Panthéon-Sorbonne University of Paris 1, 2006) as well as a master’s degree in Romance Languages and Literature (KU Leuven, 2002). In 2011-2012 she was a Fulbright Fellow and visiting research scholar at the University of Michigan Law School.

Prof. Franssen specializes in cybercrime, EU criminal law, economic and financial criminal law, as well as EU competition law. She has specific experience in comparative and interdisciplinary research (criminal law, criminology, IT law, law and economics, as well as EU competition law). She is the author of several peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in English, French, Dutch and Spanish. Together with Prof. Christopher Harding (University of Aberystwyth, UK), she set up an international research network on Criminal and Quasi-criminal Enforcement Mechanisms. In addition to being a regularly invited speaker at national and international conferences and seminars, she also organizes conferences and workshops, most recently in the area of EU criminal law, economic crime and cybercrime.

In her doctoral dissertation, entitled European Sentencing Principles for Corporations (2013), she provided a cross-cutting, in-depth study of corporate sentencing issues and proposes a European framework of sentencing principles which is based on existing principles for individuals and inspiration drawn from the sentencing practice in EU competition law with regard to cartels. A monograph based on this dissertation will be published shortly by Hart Publishing under the title The Principles of Corporate Sentencing in EU Law.
