Prof. Herman COUSY
Herman A. Cousy (°1946) got his basic law degree of Doctor juris at the Leuven University in 1969. Later on he also received a degree in Notary Law (Leuven, 1969) and a Master of Comparative Law degree (University of Chicago, 1970). He obtained his Ph.D. in 1975 with a thesis on the law of product liability.
He became associate-professor at the KU Leuven in 1975 and was made Professor Ordinarius in 1982. In 2011 he retired and became emeritus professor. His teaching assignments were mainly in Insurance law, Commercial law and Principles of the law. His publications are mostly situated in the field of insurance law (incl. European insurance law).
He is member of the Presidential Council of AIDA (Association Internationale de Droit des Assurances) and vice-chairman of its Scientific Council. He is a member of the AIDA-Europe Committee and Chairman of its Scientific Subcommittee.
Between 1984 and 2002 Prof. Herman Cousy was the Chairman of the Belgian “Commission des Assurances” which is an official advisory body to the Minister of Economic Affairs in all matters regarding the legislative and regulatory framework of private insurance. Between 1995 and 2011 he was “Assessor” in the Section Legislation of the Council of State (Conseil d’Etat) of Belgium. He was a member of the (Tilburg-Vienna) group which prepared the Principles of European Tort Law (PETL) and he is a member on the Project Group “Restatement of European Insurance Contract Law”, which prepared the “Principles of European Insurance Law” (PEICL).
He is a member of the Belgian Academy of Sciences, of the Academia Europea and of the International Academy of Comparative Law.
